How to Choose University Career
10 things that I have learned as a university student and as a mother:
2/10 – Try a Foreign University
4/10 – Sciences or Humanities?
5/10 – What if I have no idea about what to do?
6/10 – What I want and I like or what I reason I have better job opportunities?
8/10 – What if I «make a mistake»? Descartes or Hume…
9/10 – Take a sabbatical year and travel around the World
6/10- what I want and what I want or what I reason and have better job opportunities?
The appropriate answer will determine whether you have a specific vocation or not:
- If you have a specific vocation, without hesitation, the right answer will be to choose what you want because only by dedicating yourself to what you really want will make you enjoy and succeed in the workplace.
To work is hard and requires effort and, if you do not love what you do, you will procrastinate in favor of other things that you like more and you will not advance in your professional field.
You may meet someone who tells you that if you work on what you like it is like not to work. Make no mistake, to work is a necessary obligation, although it is true that if you do something you like is much more bearable and you can even «flow» with it.
- If you do not have a clear vocation, you may prefer to reason and bet on a career with more chances of having a good job as one that later allows you to oppose the official, for example.
If the purpose is that once you get the job then you will have more leisure time to devote to other activities that you like more but they are not well payed, or you have more time to enjoy it with the people you love, it is another option, equally valid. It is not a bad choice, even if someone says the opposite, because not everyone feels called by a specific vocation and if this is your case, then, it is not bad that you choose the way out of being able to have greater economic security and more free time, even if you are working is something yo don’t like «a lot1».
In this case, I encourage you to try to improve in some aspect, not only in the workplace but also from the personal point of view. Try to get your excellence, delight yourself, be your own competitor but without trying to be a perfectionist, this is not recommended. Try to enjoy what you do whatever it is and bring your unique qualities in the working group in which you develop your profession. Nothing more … and nothing less.
- And, a third different possibility: what if you are a person who likes several things, someone who has more than just one vocation?
If you find yourself in this situation, then my love friend the choice is much more difficult, you must choose which one you want to dedicate your professional life to and which one to dedicate part of your leisure time to. My advice is that if you find yourself in this position and have enough time, then it is best to cultivate both because life goes around a lot and, in the long run, maybe the optional one becomes your livelihood and, the first one chosen , for various reasons, leave it in second place.
And, whatever the choice that you make at the end, stay calm because, many times, even if you do not suspect it:
«You do not choose the things you believe in, they choose you.» Max Von Sydow
