Often, in happiness surveys people are asked if they «are» happy. The answer, in most cases, fortunately, is usually affirmative. But once given one leaves with the feeling that perhaps he is not as happy as stated a few meters back.
With happiness happens as with things that we usually like more in this life, that we run out, we escape … and that feeling of temporality is what gives, and takes away, happiness that power of fascination that exerts About us. You could say that sometimes we have or we feel but we do not own it or we do not own it as if it belonged to us. It is not ours. In fact it is nobody’s. Although I would rather say that it is hypothetically attainable for all.
That one is very happy does not detract from happiness to the other, or should not if this other knew to enjoy and not envy the happiness of others.
With happiness happens like some other concepts of our education, we have a series of preconceived ideas that make us misinterpret reality, for example:
- That you are not happy if you are not or you feel more or less happy time
- That happiness is not continuous but oscillating in time and in its form. We do not get to be happy but we enjoy happiness while we have the feeling, it reaches a high point and then it fades and we return to our basal state of mind
- That happiness is not an absolute but a relative value that will depend on our personality, our past and current circumstances, and the level of happiness that we have reached at other times throughout our lives. And as circumstances change and we change our happiness changes
Happiness is not achieved, not acquired, experienced - There is an unknown happiness such as that which consists of an avoided misfortune. We do not realize, we are not aware, how happy we should feel for the fact that some unfortunate event has not happened to us. However, it would be well at the end of the day to feel grateful for what has not happened
- Happiness varies according to age, it is not the same «Carpe diem» of youth as the serenity of maturity; Varies according to our culture and geographical location: happiness is not experienced in the East in the same way as in the West …
We see that happiness is shaped by many factors that make it a dynamic concept, and this is good news because it means that if we know what factors shape it we will be more prepared to choose what kind of happiness we want according to our way of being.
But mind, although happiness is a dynamic concept, the desire to always modify or increase it may become in itself a source of unhappiness. It is necessary to situate itself as Aristotle said in the «average», that of virtue, knowing that this intermediate point is not the same for all because happiness is not universal, but unipersonal.
